High Tension: Caterpillar-inspired Architecture (February 2017)
Collaborators: Israel Luna Miño, Marie Razzhivina, Jacob Zindroski, Luka Martinovic, Luzi Torres
Through a bottom-up biomimetic approach, this project sought to critically examine how behaviors and patterns found in nature can be integrated into architectural design methodologies. By analyzing and comparing two biological role models, the solitary caterpillar, Caloptilia serotinella, and the social caterpillar, Archips cerasivoranus, we developed strategies for bending-active plate structures using principles of incremental tensioning and aggregation.
