Dynamic Extrusion (March 2017)

Collaborators: Danny Mazur

This project puts forward a biologically-inspired computational framework for additive manufacturing logics using agent-based modeling. An initial investigation of the social caterpillar, Archips cerasivorana, is used to develop behavioral rule sets for implementation in the agent-based system. Specifically, the relationship between agent movement and material build-up is considered. Subsequently, the rules are applied to a “Seeker” algorithm, using Python in Rhino and Grasshopper. The result is a design tool for additive manufacturing via dynamic material extrusion processes.
